The “Hawaii Tribune-Herald” reports that Hawaii County is nearly done in ridding the Mountain View Gym of lead paint, but neutralizing hazardous material at othe park facilities will cost millions and take years to complete.  Asbestos ceiling tiles and mercury-filled lights were among the dangers found at several of the county’s recreational sites.   James Komatsu, a planner for the Department of Parks and Recreation, says remediation efforts have been centered o the A.J. Watt Gym in Moutnain View, where a parnership between the county, the Waters of Life Charter School, and contractor Ohana Environmental are correcting the defaults.

On Sunday, the new Bishop of the state’s largest Buddhist denomination returned to the South Kona area where he was born and told those gathered at the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii that people should “give peace a chance to live, grow, and spread throughout the world.”  Bishop Eric Matsumoto told the “Hawaii Tribune-Herald” that peace must be nurtered and cared for because it “cannot grow and spread on its own accord.”  Matsumoto is a 1977 graduate of Konawaena High School.

Hawaii Island police  have arrested 41-year-old Keolaukalani W. Kailianu for suspicion of negligent homicide, DUI, driving without insurance, and causing an accident involving death and serious injury.  Police said Kailianu was driving Ford van shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday on Kinoole Street, where he turned left onto Hualali Street, while failing to yield to oncoming traffic.  Kailianu allegedly struck a moped ridden by 22-year-0ld Ted Braxton, a UH-Hilo student.  Kailianu fled the scene with the moped wedged under the van.  The suspect was apprehended at a Banyan Drive apartment building.  Those with leads in the case should call police.

“Hawaii News Now” reports that 46-year-old Philip Howard Zimmerman made an initial court appearance Thursday in Kona.  The Bellevue, Washington man is charged with second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, 44-year-old Susan Brockert.  Court documents released by the Hawaii County Prosecutor’s Office paint a picture of a relationship marked by violence and threats.  A hearing is scheduled Tuesday in Waimea District Court on whether Zimmerman should be held without bail.  His curent bail is $350,000.

(AP).  Big Island detectives are investigating the theft of a $12,000 sushi maker.  The electric Autec brand appliance, which weighs nearly 100 pounds and is about 20 inches high, was stolen during a February burglary of a Hilo business.  Tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.

(AP).  Fify scholarships are available to members of the military, their families, and veterans to pursue a degree through the University of Phoenix’s Hawaii campus.  University officials said Friday a total of $350,000 is available for scholarships of $7,000 each.

(AP).  A judge has ordered a Kula, Maui man to complete a drug treatment program for a battery of crimes including the theft of ATMs and escaping from jail guards at a funeral last year.  Harry Kahaleauki was sentenced Friday to complete a 30-month program for substance abuse and was placed on five years’ probation.  Judge Richard Bissen of the 2nd Circuit says the sentence is “almost an unbelievable deal.”  “The Maui News” reports Kahaleauki has 32 convictions in three criminal cases on his record.
